The Lares trek in Peru, is a wonderful alternative to the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This trek, along the spectacular Lares Valley, traverses the beautiful, pristine Peruvian Andes. This is a relatively untouched area with stunning landscapes and mountain views. Here you will see the farmers and weavers in traditional dress. Although the trek is only slightly harder than the Inca Trail, it is all at high altitude, so it is essential that you have acclimatised, before undertaking it. On the final day we have the special experience of visiting the fascinating Machu Picchu, where we can marvel at the precision Incan construction skills. On the way back to Cusco, we enjoy the panoramic views of the landscape and mountains from the comfort of the Expedition train.

Transfer from the hotel at 5am and leave by bus to Lares. Along the way we appreciate the majestic Sacred Valley of the Incas with its fertile lands. Next we arrive at Calca’s little village (2940m)and get our last provisions or supplies and then continue up to the little villages of Totora and Maucaupata, where inhabitants dress in their traditional dress. They work on textiles, agriculture and cattle raising, in the main.

Finally right after a journey of approx. 4 hours by shared transport, we arrive at Lares (3,100m) and visit the hot springs. After lunch, we meet with our muleteers and began the long trek to our first campsite in Wacahuasi (3700 m). Camp here overnight.

Day 2: Wacahuasi – Ipsaycocha- Patacancha

After breakfast, we begin the trek to the second campsite. This day we begin early, because it’s a long trek and we have to cross by the Ipsaycocha high path at 4450m. From here, we admire the snow-capped peaks of Pitusiray, Sawasiray, Chicón and the famous La Verónica. We also appreciate the different landscapes. Then we get to Ipsaycocha’s Lagoon (4100m) where lunch is served.

After a siesta, we will continue toward Patacancha (3600m), an Andean village, whose inhabitants still preserve the ancestral traditions and customs, including handmade items. Here we spend the second night.

Day3: Patacancha – Willoq – Ollantaytambo

After breakfast, we leave for the little population of Willoq (3400m), whose inhabitants still preserve their original customs; also we pass by the little village of Pumamarca(3200m) and Qochapata’s archeological centre. At 2 pm, we arrive at Ollantaytambo (2850m), the tourist village and train station place, where we have lunch and spare time to explore its fascinating uphill fortress.
